YASMINE HAMDAN
Ya Nass
Ya Nass is the debut solo album by Yasmine Hamdan, written and produced in collaboration with Marc Collin (Nouvelle Vague).
Yasmine became known with Soapkills, the duo she founded in Beyrouth, which must have been the first indie/electronic band to appear in the Middle East. The music of Soapkills quickly became the soundtrack to the vibrant, young arts scene which developed in postwar Lebanon, the band gradually acquired an emblematic status and, to this day, Yasmine is considered as an undergound icon throughout the Arab ...
Made to Measure : Back In The Spotlight
MADE TO MEASURE could be described as the aural equivalent of a collection of art books. 35 albums came out, by artists such as Hector Zazou, John Lurie (with his soundtracks for Jim Jarmusch's "Stranger Than Paradise" and "Down By Law"), Fred Frith, Arto Lindsay, Zelwer, Steven Brown, Peter Principle, David Cunningham, Benjamin Lew, Daniel Schell, Aksak Maboul, Minimal Compact and more.
The loose idea behind the title of the series was: this is music which had been or could have been "made to measure" for other media (film, theatre, dance, video).
We have recently repressed the inaugural release of the MADE TO MEASURE series which includes pieces by four artists:
Aksak Maboul's "Un Chien mérite une mort de chien" is clearly inspired by the subject matter of the play it was written for (Vladimir Mayakovsky and the Russian Futurists), while their strangely melodic minimal turntablist piece "Scratch Holiday" (entirely generated with a turntable, a vinyl 7" single from the '60s and some orange marmalade) is allegedly the soundtrack of a Honeymoon Killers holiday movie;
Tuxedomoon's obsessive "Verdun" comes from the soundtrack of a Dutch movie about the famous WW1 battlefield;
Minimal Compact's elegant "Pieces For Nothing" were created for a dance performance by choreographer Pierre Droulers;
Benjamin Lew's piece ("A la Recherche de B.") was the soundtrack for a fashion exhibition.
